What is the Immigration Medical Examination (IME)?

The Immigration Medical Examination (IME), sometimes referred to as a medical exam for permanent residence, is a standard health assessment required by the Government of Canada. Its primary purpose is to ensure that your health condition does not pose a risk to public health in Canada and will not place an excessive demand on Canadian health or social services.

It is a mandatory step for most permanent residence applicants, as well as for certain temporary residence applicants (visitors, students, workers, refugees).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the IRCC Medical Examination

How much does the immigration medical examination cost?

The fees for the immigration medical examination are set by the clinic and vary depending on the applicant’s age. Please call us at [Phone number] to obtain the exact rates for adults and children.

Does the RAMQ cover the medical examination for permanent residence?

No. The medical examination required by IRCC is not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ), even if you hold a valid health insurance card. You will be required to pay the full fee at the time of your visit.

When and how will I receive my results?

You do not receive the results directly. Once all your tests are completed (including blood tests and the X-ray), our designated physician will submit your complete medical file directly to IRCC through the secure eMedical electronic system. This process generally takes 5 to 10 business days. IRCC will then review your file.

What happens if my medical examination reveals a health issue?

If any abnormalities are detected, the physician will inform you. IRCC will review your file and determine the next steps. In some cases, they may request additional tests or follow-up before making a final decision.
